What do you think Stevens meant?"

I think Stevens meant that before something beautiful can come something has to be destroyed. A seed does not become a plant until the seed dies in the ground. Thus it is with everything beautiful. Something has to die before beauty can come. Artwork does not come to be until the artist destroys a lot of paint and a canvas. Salvation did not come until Jesus died. Something must die before beauty can come.
