Wildcard Thursday: The Toys of My Childhood

"I liked dolls as a child, but as an adult, I love them! They represent the good in all of us and display the diverse beauty of humankind.”

The Toys of My Childhood

Left behind
in the toy box
of the First Southern Baptist Mission
in the Smelter Heights
of Blackwell, Oklahoma.

Not left behind
are the memories of playing dolls
with childhood acquaintances,
my sister,
or by my self.

Playing dolls
was an interesting phenomena
intended to teach girls
that a woman's place
in in the home
producing
and raising children.

I liked my dolls,
I enjoyed playing dolls--
by myself--
the weird thing is
I can remember the faces
of my dolls,
but not their names.

I think I had a Betsy Wetsy,
but I didn't call her
Betsy.

There was the three-year-old
sized doll
with blondish red hair,
and there was the black doll
Grandma bought me
because I ask for the doll.
