Quilted
How we were stitched together...
my sister and I. A scrap
of red satin, a tatter of blue.
This was our great-aunt's quilt
she cobbled together
as quick as she could.
Her sister was dying.
We lay under it, stretched out
on the couch's stiff coffin.
Red welts, scratchy coughs,
the delusions of fever.
We memorized the patterns of cloth,
the long narrow strips sewn together
in square blocks. It gave comfort
seven years after our grandmother
had died. Now a tatter of blue,
a memory of red satin brings it all back.
