Summer Memories
Sunday, July 2, 2017
"Summer is not obligatory. We can start an infernally hard jigsaw puzzle in June with the knowledge that, if there are enough rainy days, we may just finish it by Labor Day, but if not, there's no harm, no penalty. We may have better things to do."
Growing up,
in Blackwell, Oklahoma,
there was never anything obligatory
about summer activities
because they were fun.
In a child's mind,
fun and obligations
are two completely different things.
Sometimes
we went to Vacation Bible School
at the First Southern Baptist Mission
in the Smelter Heights;
there we memorized Bible verse,
and learned numerous other things--
some subtle--
that I'm still sorting out
and attempting to make sense of.
Other times,
we went to The Lake
(I don't know its name
because we only referred to it
as The Lake)
where we water skied,
fished,
barbecued,
tended my grandparents' garden,
and,
on July 4,
set off fireworks,
