Do you see the Syrian refugee, And the family who fled Iran? You see them saluting Old Glory! On this day and everyday, remember the quote on The Statue of Liberty. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” Emma Lazarus The United States of America is a country settled by refugees and migrants. The ancestors of the Native Americans came first, they walked across the Bering Land Bridge1 and, perhaps, even lived on the land bridge for thousands of years before migrating to the rest of the American continent. Later in American history people, for one reason or another, fled Europe to build a new life in America. On Flag Day, we must remember that we are a nation of migrants and refugees who sought new opportunities and, in doing so, built a nation. Footnotes |
