Brief essay. Marie of Romania was Princess Maria Of Edinburg. She was the last Queen consort of Romania as the wife of King Ferdinand 1. Born into the British family, she was titled Princes Marie Of Edinburgh. Her parents were Prince Alfred, Duke Of Edinburg and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. She refused a marriage proposal from her cousin the future King George V. She married Crown Prince Ferdinand of Romania. Marie was loved by the Romanian people. Her husband was considered weak willed and Maria just took over and ruled the land. She was high spirited and had trouble adjusting to life in Romania but after the people seeing she was a good Queen and her husband was ruler in name only, she became a respected and beloved Queen. She learned how to speak the Romanian language and dress carefully. She showed respect for Orthodox rituals. After the outbreak of World War I, Marie urged Ferdinand to declare war on Germany and he did in 1916. Marie, Ferdinand and their five children took refuge in Moldavia. She and her three daughters acted as nurses in the military hospital. On December 1, 1918, the province of Transylvania, following Bessarbia and Bokovina, united with the Old Kingdom. Marie was now Queen of the Greater Romania. She attended the Paris Peace Conference where she campaigned for international recognition of the enlarged Romania. In 1922, she and Ferdinand were crowned in specially-built cathedral in the ancient city of Alba Iulia, in an elaborate ceremony which she mirrored their status as queen and king of a united state. After the death of Ferdinand, Marie stepped down as Queen and let her grandson Michael take the throne and she moved to their home by the Black Sea.
