What Makes a Good Name

Names of characters are a big thing for me when it comes to my stories. If you have ever been a victim of Anniversary Reviews then you know I try to give all of my characters a name. And if I haven't gotten to you yet, I will sooner or later. I think it makes a character feel more real if they have one.

Not only do I give them names, I try to give them names from their native planets. So far, I haven't had too much trouble remembering them. True, I could just use Earth names. That's a writers choice to do. I prefer to keep as much of a planet as I can. Including what they call their weapons, spouses, children, etc.

Sometimes I have no choice but to use Earth names. But so far I haven't had to do it. I will if I ever get around to writing a couple of my television scripts, two big box office movies, and at least one Novel series. The main reason why I usually have to use Earth names is because their names are so long even shortening them makes them difficult to read. That's not the only reason. It's just the usual one.

As for the names themself, Earth is unique in the way they name their people. There are several thousand planets that do it similarly. What I'm talking about is that there is no pattern in the naming. Some names can even go with either gender too. I have pointed that out in my reviews too. Most planets do have a pattern.

On about ninety-nine percent of them male names end a consonant and the females end in a vowel. And on quite a few planets they end in two vowels. There are also a lot of planets that male names begin with a vowel and the female ones end with one.
