Is it true, because it is truth? |
Roger's family was atheist. At this point in my life I was clueless. We were neighbors on Bellevue Avenue in Cambridge and had not yet entered high school. Nevertheless, we felt confident in most topics and enjoyed debating them .. Roger thought going to church was backward and a waist of time, "Is God going to help you?" I surmised that God would help true believers. Roger remarked God did not help the Jews in NAZI work camps. "Saints and sinners died in the same way." Roger said. Roger's parents were Jewish. I repeated my dad's belief that the Jew's were being punished for rejecting Jesus. But, Roger pointed to the millions of Christians , who were massacred by the NAZI New World Order. "Why did God allow it?" he queried. I didn't have an answer for God, but countered, "Why did we allow it?" During the rise of Hitler's popularity, there was a Do Nothing Party in America. "Hitler could have been stopped, but most people did not want a war." I expounded. "Do you have proof that God exists?" Roger retorted. "Can something come nothing?" I answered with a toothy smile. "I believe in a higher power, I don't know if it is intelligent." I quoted Mel Brooks. We chuckled. Roger's parents were both psychologists. My dad was the Head of the English department at Rindge and Latin High. It was a warm summer of 78. Peace out... (Y) V |
