NO REAL NEWS FROM SOCIAL MEDIA
PROMPT: What kind of responsibility does social media have in breaking big, important news stories? First of all, I do not believe everything that I find floating around on social sites. Too many 'stories' are the equivalent of tabloid garbage; Enquirer'esque. Maybe some items are fuelled and fed by rumour and gossip. News flashes are not always current or relevant. Lots of 'news' is re-hashed and re-shared. Responsibility is not a word I'd associate with Facebook at all. It's a sharing site. People are free to post, copy, and paste pretty well whatever they want. It's a 'social' site' Purveyors peruse comments, photos, jokes, quotes, and, yes, the occasional tidbit of news. They share. They 'talk' amongst themselves. They are mingling from a distance. No one is a newscaster. If you want breaking news subscribe to MSN or news' sites.
