Bringing Them Back
By Lisa Noe *Cat2*

“I ask mom and dad to let me stay home alone tonight as they attended a Halloween celebration with friends in the city. I live in the deep woods of the Appalachian Mountains, where there are no forms of outdoor lights and it is an extremely rural location. The closest neighbors are a mile away in the deep forest.
My parents think that because I am only fifteen years old, that something bad might happen and I wouldn’t know how to handle it. After pleading with them and pestering them all day they finally decided I could stay home alone.”

“Now your father and I will be at the Anderson’s in town, the number is by the phone as are the numbers for the police, ambulance, and fire station. If you get in to any trouble what so ever call 911.”

“I’ll be fine you guys go on already.”

“Your mother and I won’t be out too late, we should be home by 1:45 AM.”

“Okeedoekee, I’ll see ya then, now go on already.”

“No parties, or boys young lady” father warned.

“And keep the house clean, I’ve worked hard on it.”

“OK already, I’m just gonna watch some scary movies and make some popcorn, ya don’t have to worry about me now you all go on!”

“After my parents left I called my best friend milly and invited her to come over.”

“I don’t know I’ve got to take my little sister out to trick or treat maybe when I get done I’ll come over.” She said over the telephone.

So I turned on the television and sure enough it was filled with horror spoofs and I slouched down on the recliner and threw my legs over the arm of the chair and reclined it. Oh how relaxing it felt in father’s big Lazy Boy, he never allowed us to sit there because he was always in it. As I turned the TV around from channel top channel I found the movie “Halloween”, I loved that movie, although I had seen it several times, it was what I chose to watch. I jumped up and popped some popcorn in the microwave and poured it into a large bowl. As I sit watching the movie with All of the lights off, I kept hearing a noise coming from the back of the house. It sounded like a scratching noise against the door. I was afraid; my mind started racing thinking of all the things it could be, like a crazed killer like the one on the movie I was watching.
I thought about Michael Myers the character in the movie and I wondered if perhaps a person like he could be out in my back yard. There it was again a scratching noise, and I jumped up, grasping a flashlight, which was in the top drawer of the end table by the recliner. Who’s there a shouted, and I ran to the kitchen in the front of the house and grabbed a knife from the butcher block. I spoke again calling to whomever was out there, “I’ve got a knife and I’ll use it!” Then I saw a shadow moving and I heard as it were a murmuring of a voice or something from outside. I will call the police; you’d better get out of here!
I took the phone in my hand and I heard a knock at the back door. “Who’s there?” I asked and that is when I heard a laugh and a voice or two mumbling and giggling. I turned on the overhead light and looked outside the window. There stood Milly, and my other friend Jenny, falling over laughing because they knew they had scared the dickens out of me. I opened the door inviting them in.

“You two fools, get in here, are you crazy or something? Why would you try to scare me like that? I could have killed one of you.”

“Ah come on Bren you know we were just joking, it was just a Halloween prank.”
Millie said.
“I thought you were taking your little sister trick or treating?”

“I did, I finished early and me and Jenny thought we’d come on over and have some fun.”

“Hey guys lets call Brad and Tommy and see if they want to come over.”
Jenny was boy crazy and always had to include the guys in everything we did.

“I don’t know, I mean I promised my parents I wouldn’t have a party.”

“What party we’re just having a few friends in to watch some TV.”

“Yeah” said Millie, “I agree we need a few guys here for things to really get fun.”

“Well I guess if we just stick to those two it would be all right,” I said.

“We called the boys and in about fifteen minutes they showed up bringing Brad’s cousin Jeff from Maine.”

“You got the whole house to yourself, we can really have a good time,” said Brad.

“No! We can watch scary movies and tell scary stories but we aren’t doing anything that we’re not supposed to like drink or anything else!” I said with a firm voice.

“OK, I know lets have a séance” Brad said.

“Oh yeah that sounds great, I’ve never done anything like that before,” said Milly

“Is that OK with you Bren?”

“Yeah, sounds like fun.”

We all sit on the floor in the den and held hands while, Brad’s cousin, Jeff, led us in having the seance.
He began asking for anyone who could hear his voice to come to us, he spoke openly to the spirits and it was a spooky time. We had all of the lights out accept for some candles which each of us had sitting in front of us. Again he spoke:

“Come to us ole spirit of the dead, souls from beyond visit us.”
At first there was nothing. All of us had our eyes closed and we were told to concentrate on the dead.
We were about to give up and opened our eyes looking at one another when it happened. The candles began going out one by one and each of us felt a chill in the air. A smell of something fowl seeped into the air surrounding us. Millie began rubbing at the back of her neck.

“something keeps tickling my neck.”

“It’s just your hair.” Said Brad

“Maybe it’s the spirit of the dead.” Jeff laughed

“What is that smell, it’s God awful?”

“Have you ever done this before Jeff?”

:”No! I think we may have made a mistake.”

“Why?” asked Brad

“I’m scared”
“No need to be scared.” Jeff said

A dark shadow fell upon the room and a low moaning sound filled the air.
“Yeah you still think there’s no need to be scared?” I said.

“What time is it?”

“Why does that matter?”

“I wish my parents would get home that’s what’s the matter.”

The shadow began moving all over the room and moaning louder and louder,
It then began speaking,

“Why have you disturbed me? I have walked the earth for many years seeking a soul to call my own so I might come back to life and you have brought me here to choose among you.”

We ran in separate directions screaming, but there was no place to go the ghost that we had conjured set its sights on Jeff. It covered him with its dark shadow and he screamed.

“Help!”

We did not know what to do so we held hands and began again with another séance and sure enough another ghost appeared this one illuminated with light. We told the ghost what was happening and it devoured the dark shadow with its bright light.

“I am a good spirit, you have conjured the ghost of Sandbastion he who is evil to the core.
I will rid you of this creature and you must promise to never have another séance for they are of the dark arts and you children don’t need to be a part of that.”

The bright light took the dark shadow and the two of them disappeared into the night.

“My parents should be home pretty soon, lets not tell them that we had the séance they might get mad, and you boys better get going.”

“Do we have to walk home by ourselves, it’s awful dark out there.”

“You walked here in the dark.” I said

“Yeah, well that was before the evil tried to consume Jeff.”

“Their gone.”

The boys left the house at around 1:00AM, walking through the thick dark woods of the Appalachian Mountains, and they were never seen again.
