Jane wrote about love and charm. She felt that tenderness came from the heart. Charm is nice but is a form of flirting. If charm comes from the heart, that would be alright. In the beginning, Darcy had no charm or tenderness just snobbery but he fell in love, he was tender and quite charming. Handsome is as handsome does. A little charm is nice if it is sincere. Most of Jane's male characters had charm and tenderness. It's what in your heart that counts. If charm is sincere, tenderness and love follow. We need love and women want men to be charming and kind. This is how I see it. It isn't mush or lust. Just love and flattery but never use someone. If there is no tenderness, there is no charm. This is my story and I'm sticking to it. Jane would agree.
