red herring - something, especially a clue, that is or is intended to be misleading or distracting.

The prompt for June 2, 2015: In writing a mystery is it essential to have a red herring?

If I ever get a red herring, it would purely be by accident. My characters would be in a dance of the hunter and prey. So misdirection, a/k/a strategy and cunning, is probably going on, but I would hope that it was more cleverly disguised than a red herring. I do not like red herring because it screams slapstick telegraphing of actions.
