SPRING HAS SLIPPED
SPRING HAS SLIPPED
My nine-year old granddaughter wants to know when Spring "will get here". According to the calendar, it is "here". Where does it go and why does it return so reluctantly? I tried explaining that Spring arrives whenever it wants to make an appearance. Spring doesn't like to be hurried or pushed. We've been teased by almost balmy days in which the enormous snow piles seemed to shrink within minutes. Water could be heard rushing and flowing to drainage pipes. Sloshing and splashing briefly replaced slogging and slipping. Grass, albeit dead and brown, actually peaked out from beneath the crush of dying snow. "When, Nanna?", persisted Emily. She seemed to want a definite date and time. She has lived long enough to know that weather is unpredictable. Spring doesn't breeze in just in time to satisfy a set time like keeping an appointment. Spring is probably hesitating around a corner with cold feet. Emily and I would really like to venture outdoors with our bare feet. We are tired of heavy boots. Is Spring intimidated by Winter? For every wee bit of 'meltage', twice as much snow returns to obliterate the landscape. Enough already! It's been five tedious months of bundling weather. C'mon Spring; step up!
