Wake-up Call Outside world house-creaks through cozy, cotton-batting gauze of not-yet-awake, of flimsy balance between dreamy deafness and carbonated clock-bubbles ticking: no alarm, no five AM siren-ed wake-up call. Just the gurgle-spatter-hiss of morning elixir-coffee brewing, of repeated thump of puppy tail beating against my foot. (I have yet to open my eyes, or so much as move. How does she know I’m half-way conscious?) Grasping at retreating strands of a dream where waves washed sandy shore and I slurped the final sip of Mai-Tai, the need to let other fluids drain has me reconsidering simply falling off the cliff to sleep. Sand-hill cranes screech, reverberate off my skull. Wind-chimed breeze soothes, wafts eau d'garden inside. Morning robin chorus interrupted by insistent whimpers, head butts: “Let me out, now!” in easily translatable puppy-speak. Chronic snuffle-snort snores from across the bed morph to body stretching yawn. Dry-throated, raspy mumble prompts puppy prancing up his body, which elicits something between yelp and high-pitched groan. Covers flop, feet hit the floor. “Coffee?” |
