The antagonist is a number of people
Father Jonathan sees his self as a sly manipulative man who takes advantage of others weaknesses to gain a place for himself. He saw Bishop Frances abuse boys. Using this knowlege and some interaction of his own he has manipulated the the older man into putting him in as his replacement. In the past Jonathan garnered lots of dontations from older women for the church his has set a standard and is noticed by the Bishops on the East coast and in Rome.

Shlo Goldstein- A devoute Jewish man who is an importer of goods from Isreal to the USA. His love of art and antiquites brings him in contact with the movers and shakers in the Israeli communtiy as well as their counter parts here in the US. He hears about a painting. He has some knowlege of it as a distant relative sent letters to his 4 times great grandfather from Germany. The letters were bound in abook that stayed in the family. The story about the painting and what happened has been his favorite. When he hears the painting may be real and not something made up by a relative to entertain he begins to look for the truth. A contact in the Guggenhiem Museum leaks there have been inq made about Aramis Jacobe and his painting. Would he like to do some sleuthing? He begins to search for the painting. What it reveals when he finds it is amazing to him. It causes him to question his own beliefs and traditions.

A Christian historian. A converted jew.
