"Dragons In The Garden" (Poetry/Day 15 Entry)
Dragons In The Garden

I went into the garden and sat beside the old oak tree.
“I’d be underfoot,” Mom said as she was cooking.
What a funny saying; she’s never stepped on me.
So I went to my special place just to do some looking.

The evening mist was forming and drifted in the air
as I explored my special place when there was a sound.
I tip-toed to the backyard fence, taking greatest care,
when suddenly – you’ll never guess – what I saw on the ground.

It was a little dragon; he was green with golden wings.
He climbed up on my hand and stared right back at me.
He told me little stories about all kinds of things
and made me promise not to tell and keep his secrecy.

I heard my mother calling me so I asked if he could wait.
I had to go for supper or Mom would get quite cross.
I promised to bring him something from my dinner plate.
I’m sure I can sneak some broccoli. For me, that’s not a loss.

When I snuck back after dinner, he wasn’t there anymore.
I guess there’s only special times when dragons can appear
but sometimes on misty evenings, I hear a tiny roar
and I know inside my heart that he’s still waiting here.
