The Restroom
I watched as the fly buzzed round and round the speckled bulb hanging from the ceiling. It made little sizzling noises as it bumped the hot glass. Sweat trickled down my forehead and dripped off my nose mixing with the two bloody teeth that fell into the dirt-encrusted sink. I held onto the sides of it as acid bile rose in my mouth, and I spit again. More blood ran down the sides of the basin.

I could hear car engines starting and leaving outside as customers completed their gas purchases. I looked up again at the buzzing fly and suddenly felt faint. Grabbing tighter onto the sides of the sink, the cracked green tiled floor came up to meet me. I wretched from the strong urine smell as I sucked air up my nose to stay conscious. My head rested against the grimy commode.

I jumped as the flimsy door reverberated from his banging fist.

“Hurry up and get yourself cleaned up in there and get out here.” My captor sounded impatient and a little desperate, not good for me.

I hauled myself upright and looked at the pool of blood in the sink. Dipping my finger in it, I traced the letters H E L P onto the cracked mirror. Underneath I wrote MBH 45E. Then I turned on the water full blast and splashed it over my painful lips. Pulling a paper towel from the wall dispenser, I held it over my mouth and opened the door just wide enough to squeeze through.

Outside in the sunlight, I looked for his response.

“Okay, Janie. Great job.. That’s a wrap. Everybody go to lunch and be back here at one sharp for the next scene.”

Thank goodness. I wouldn’t want to have to go through that again!
