The Liquid Amber Speaks
I am big. I have been big for years,
every year getting bigger. Bigger than you,
I throw a cold blanket over your house.
You claim it as shade.
What you don't know,
(and what will soon hurt you)
is that my roots go deep,
go as deep as I'm high.
They are my feelers, they are my fingers
probing under your lawn. Way down deep,
below your dahlia's anchors, the bulbs
of your trumpeting daffodils. I go deeper,
further, meaner than your superficial flowers.
In the dirty dark I am lifting,
gradually, without noise,
millimetre by invisible millimetre,
the foundations of your house.
I will push and I will push and I will push
and your world will be uprooted,
and I will stay tall, with a liquid amber crown.
