The Suspects

“Mrs. Mason,” said Detective Jones, who was sitting on the living room couch next to Mrs. Mason, “when was the last time you saw the deceased?”

“New Year’s Eve,” she smiled sweetly at the detective. “Are you sure you don’t want a cup of coffee or a glass of wine?”

“No, I’m on duty,” he returned Mrs. Mason’s smile. “What was Mr. Mason doing?”

“I suppose he’s lying in his grave, my husband’s been dead for twenty year. At least, he can stay buried. Uncle Harry can’t seem to stay any where, much less a grave.”

“Uh,” the detective glanced nervously at Andrea who was sipping a cup of black coffee. He returned his gaze to Mrs. Mason, “I mean the deceased, not your husband.”

“Oh, Uncle Harry,” she frowned, “he was eating blackeyed peas and drinking Irish whisky. I got tired of watching him eat and listening to Arthur and Pamela argue, so I took an afternoon nap.”

“Arthur and Pamela, is that your son and daughter-in-law?”

“Arthur is my son, but Pamela is... or was Uncle Harry’s wife.”
