You always remember....
When something monumental happens, people always remember where they were and what they were doing when they first hear the news. Ten years ago today, I was sitting in a jury room wondering what was taking so long and why we weren't being called back into the courtroom. We were shocked when the judge walked in. We knew something terrible had happened. He did not tell us much. I guess he did not know much; it was only 9:20 A.M. He said there had been an explosion at the twin towers in NYC, and we were excused for the day. We looked at each other in disbelief as we filed through the empty courtroom. Now, we were the ones asking all the questions, but no one had answers.

As I watch the ceremony today, my memories of jury duty are mixed with the horrific news of the disaster. The case I sat on went on as usual. I returned to continue my juror service the next morning. It might have been best to postpone the trial, because I know it did not have my full attention. It was not that important, an overtime pay dispute between an employee and empoyer. But life does go on, and I guess normalcy helps in some ways.

I noticed much stricter security the next day as I entered the building that housed the Federal courtroom. It was raining, and I had my umbrella. I guess it was considered a weapon now. A scanner was magically in place, and everything I carried got scanned. My umbrella remained with the security officer until I left. Everything was a little disconcerting and served to keep my attention on what had happened.

Strangely, I cannot remember our verdict ... or even deliberating.

until next time...c
