Day to day stuff....a memoir without order. |
Sitting in my porch swing this evening and thinking about how hot it was, I tried to remember a time when it was freezing. I thought maybe that would make me cooler. So I thought back to when Jim and I laid out the foundation for our house. It was during the month of January 1981 and January can be very cold, even in Florida. The wind was blowing and my ears were numb and stinging. My job was to hold a thing called a stadia rod, which sort of looks like a big yardstick. Jim would sight through his David White surveying instrument to a certain mark on the rod and determine where to run a string to make the foundation level....all Greek to me. The only thing I knew was that I had to hold the rod very steady or I got yelled at...and it was cold. I was bundled up in a heavy sweater and pants, but I couldn't stop shaking. I guess our new neightbor next door saw me shivering. She came over bearing hot coffee and introduced herself. She was very nice and that is how we all got acquainted. She was a potter...I say was because they moved away to Oregon I think several years ago. Anyway, she made these strange looking wall hangings out of clay, weird shapes with separate pieces of clay stuck on them...hmmm. I wonder if she ever sold any. But she could draw portraits. She showed me her house that day, which she had designed, and she had drawn portraits of her children, They lined the wall of the hallway...very pretty. I never did feel any cooler though with all that thinking. I guess 93 degress is just 93 degrees....hot and humid. until next time....c |
