Day to day stuff....a memoir without order. |
July 20 - Prompt -Write about the good times (without bringing up the bad) of a past relationship that went wrong. We went all the way through school together, from first grade to graduation. He was my first crush, my first boyfriend. Sometimes we were buddies, sometimes more than that. When he was absent from class, I missed him and worried that he was okay. When he was present, somehow my heart felt different. I watched him play baseball and yelled when he pitched a strike. I cheered when he made a basketball shot. At the Fair, we rode the rollercoaster and the ferris wheel, and he knocked over bottles and won prizes for me, a panda, my favorite. At the beach, we dunked and splashed each other and shared hotdogs and Cokes. Anytime I needed someone to talk to, he was the one I called. At school dances, we did the stroll, the twist, the cha-cha, and when Mary Wells sang "My Guy", he was the one I thought about. The night of the Senior Prom when he told me he was joining the Navy, I though I might die. I was already enrolled for the fall at the University and had my suspicions when he hadn't mentioned his plans yet. It didn't make hearing it any easier. In three days he left for the Great Lakes and Basic Training. I saw him only once more on his first leave. He had met someone, and they were engaged. Even now, almost fifty years later, I feel like crying. until next time...c |
