FL 7-Day Blogging Challenge Day 5
Prompt for January 13: " blog about a favorite family tale. Maybe a story your great grandparents told you as a child or something about your family history you heard at one time or another." Chosen from Contestant Suggestions

I have stories from both sides of my family tree. Today I am blogging about a story from my father’s side of the family because it explains why we spell our name differently from other family with similar names.

My last name is Darbe; I know that is an unusual spelling because I have to spell it every time I encounter someone I don’t know. The more common spelling is Darby; however, there is a story that goes along with the unusual spelling of our name.

Grandma Darbe, my father’s mother, told a story about the spelling of the name. It seems four brothers came to America from Ireland, when the disembarked in New York each one of the brothers chose to spell his name differently, which explains why there are so many different spellings of the name Darbe, Darby, Darbie or Darbee, etc.
