A Good Friend

This is my response to "A Good Friend"  for Friday, May 22, 2009 in the "Follow the Leader" 

A good friend responds
to the gut feeling
of call her now
even though the dinner arrangement
isn’t until Saturday afternoon
and the washing machine just flood the basement
knocking out the landline.

A good friend knows
that the friendship tie
has nothing to do with genetic kinship,
martial connections,
or a common umbilical cord;
friendship goes beyond all these
and forms bonds at the soul’s level.

A good friend understands
that while her friend may change
in subtle and obvious ways
the cord connecting
one to another is never severed;
sometimes it may appear
thread bare and worn
but it remains intact
even under the strain of distance
and the idiot you’re married to
just made a pass at ….

A good friend is there
waiting in the wings to applaud,
or offer a shoulder to cry on.
