Enga mellom fjella: where from across the meadow, poems sing from mountains and molehills.

Trolliver's grave
Trolliver's grave

         for Travis Oliver

Limp bangs hanging, sipping rosemint,
Trolliver leans back on the pole:
nonchalant, slim assed, black dressed.
He's glad he came to New York for success.
Thin lips search landscapes of pavement and dirt.
He'll always have jobs
as long as there's sidewalks to work.
but crushed bangles catch reflections of blight
and a momentary hurt.
His eyes become grave; eyelashes blink rime;
then in a flash of a smile he's gone as he glides,
Hey honey, you're cute, do you have the time?

I saw Travis at Butterfly Herbs. He is leaving for New York this coming week to follow his dream. When I asked whether he has a plan B he responded with the old quote, "I'll always have a job as long as there are sidewalks." I had a poem sketched out 15 minutes later. Of course, the result is chilling ... but far too real for many young men. Thankfully, he hasn't burnt his bridges here. I've already read the sketch to him; this is edited.

blah burp blah:

Butterfly Herbs' prices have gone up for the first time in 8 years. No more pot of tea for $1. (I had an herbal mocha hazelnut, carob based, yesterday) No more cup of coffee for $1 either (with refills 'twas $1.50). I treated myself to a chai milkshake (made with cardamom ice cream).

I met Greg Peters who will present a couple essays at the Environmental Studies reading, Wild Mercy, this coming Monday at the Angler. U. Montana has a creative writing component to their environmental program and puts out the magazine "Camas" (deadline is March 15th).

Does anyone remember Melanie Safka? Some will remember her silly songs like "Brand new key" but this one from around 1970 is haunting, "Leftover wine": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEQzX4AO4X4 I'm listening to the melancholic rant "Tuning my guitar": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIt4PqlhKh4&NR=1 Her raw voice is so distinct, as in this Ed Sullivan Show clip from 1971 of "Ruby tuesday": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hL3PrpWsmoU

I did not go to the Senior Center election brouhaha yesterday. Last night Allen told me he had to stand for 45 minutes just to vote; and yes, the police were called in again: http://www.missoulian.com/articles/2009/02/11/news/mtregional/news10.txt

I'm finding that reorganization of 'my favorites' is helping me keep up with you-all. I won't miss as many folk and then feel guilty for not keeping in touch.

WEATHER GNU'S:

When tornado season hits, I feel nostalgic for Oklahoma. It's a sure sign Spring is stirring things up. I can almost hear the frogs peeping. *Smile*
