A response to a blog entry "Invalid EntryOpen in new Window. by twyls which is part of "Invalid Item"  Open in new Window. by A Guest Visitor :

Yes, you open a Pandora's box with this one.

I could disagree with feminism being the reason. I do think it is a factor along with multi-culturalism *Shock* and globalization.

I think materialism is the root.

We have grown away from traditional cultures with traditional mores. Common-courtesy is expressed differently in different cultures (specifics are not common to all). Globalization wears away specific cultural customs in the same way a lingua-franca or trade language simplifies a language. Something gives. As our societies become more multi-cultural customs come in conflict and ... something gives. Feminism is an important aspect of this change. In many parts of our society (but not all) women no longer are considered second class citizens defined by strict gender roles. Slaves knew manners well. So did women. Few are suggesting we go back to those days.

So ... moving forward.

All cultures seek courtesy as it helps smooth over inter-personal relationships. But ... materialism stands in its way. This seeking of material goods and defining people in terms of material status impedes efforts to treat each other as the spiritual beings we are meant to be.

The solution?

Since we are becoming global, I believe that children need to be taught the Golden Rule and basic courtesies related to how we treat each other. Although I believe mothers are the first teacher, fathers must participate as must the entire 'village'. Refined manners like knowing which fork to use with shrimp need to be put in their place (if there is one; in Kansas shrimp is irrelevant). By emphasizing Spirituality (the roots of all religious teachings) we draw nearer to each other. I truly believe that that is what our Creator wishes.

And now I get to put this in my blog. *Wink* Thanks for pointing the way to this prompt. *Heart*
