Up close they are even more intriguing.

Japanese air conditioning

         for Jim Bogan, poet

On cold resistant August days,
scroll down beyond these birch bark nodes.

Imagine water
falling
falling.

Wave bronze scraps to fan your thoughts.
Meditate on breezes
cooling
cooling.

I wrote this in response to a comment made by Jim Bogan (U. Missouri-Rolla) tonight at a poetry reading to fete Elizabeth Schultz. He mentioned something about Japanese air conditioning = meditating on a waterfall and the cooling air. In any case I had pieces of bronze birch bark in my hands and wrote a couple poems on them, including this one.

ME:

Went to "Her Voice : Their voices" with Denise Low, Steve Bunch, Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg; Cyrus Console, Mary Wharff and Jim Bogan. I guess they were all students of Beth Schultz who read too! Denise Low, Poet Laureate of Kansas goes back the furthest, having had a class with Beth in 1967.

Although Beth is a distinguished teacher she didn't start writing poetry until after she retired in 2001. She said the spigot just turned on. *Smile* Such an inspiration for those of us who started writing later in life!

BLOGVILLE:

scarlett_o_h just wings it when LaLa Land doesn't provide grist for ye olde blog. I should do that! I guess I could tell ya all how I dug a hole and fell into it and came out in Oz ... feet up and totally confused until someone said, Kåzza, you okey mate? But ya wuddna believe it anyways.

Scarlett's entry? "Invalid EntryOpen in new Window. Almost believable considering what she goes through some days. This one is heart-warming though and very true: "Invalid EntryOpen in new Window.
