MY LOT


Why should I repent that I could
Never win the heart of a dame?
Why this be a stigma for me?
Why should this cause me any shame?

Why miss winning a single heart,
When I have won many a mind?
I’m gratified that many do,
Solace in my poetry find.

If they find echoes of their love
In my melody and my verse,
If it can touch chords of their heart,
Why, then, should I feel any worse?

He, in His wisdom and bounty,
Gave me some and deprived of some.
I welcome what’s come to my lot;
Why lament that which did not come?
