WHAT WE DON'T SEE: a sonnet
WHAT WE DON'T SEE: a sonnet
All that we see need not always be true.
Of this we must ourselves always remind.
The sky and sea are, from distance, so blue.
But, go nigh them and no colour you find.
The outward is often a sham, a mask,
Worn so that what’s inside may be concealed.
Before the outer fools us, we must ask:
‘Does this cloak have daggers yet unrevealed?’
What we don’t see may still, in fact, exist,
But may be seen only by those gifted.
Enroll in His true, selfless workers’ list;
The veil from your eyes will then be lifted.
By His grace the lame can, mountains, conquer.
The dumb, too, can eloquent speech render.
