SANTA’S GIFTS—a sonnet
SANTA’S GIFTS—a sonnet
[Poor children have no place in Santa’s address book]
"Mom, have I been a good child all this year?
Have I spoken a lie or fouled my tongue?
Have I hurt your pet cat, which is so dear?
Or, in ignorance, something precious flung?
On Christmas day I have heard say them all,
Gifts are given by Santa, the man old.
All I want is a new red woolen shawl,
The one I have is torn and I feel cold".
"You have been the best of all, my darling.
You have been true and sweet and loved my cat.
You have not broken nor have lost a thing.
But, still, my dear, I must say frankly that:
The gifts of Santa are meant for the rich;
Between you and your shawl that is the hitch".
