MEETING YOU

[A saga of romance--translated from the original Hindi/Urdu Ghazal]

Your one word just took my heart.
What unfairness on your part!

You came nigh and I got numb,
Eyes stuck on you, tongue got dumb.

I cherish the woes you gave.
Those shattered dreams I shall crave.

I adored glance of your eye;
But now only tears shed I.

The one ever at distance,
Has come unveiled for penance!

* Written in aabb 7-7-7-7 format

*Translated from the original poem in Hindi / Urdu , which is in ghazal form. For
a detailed note on ghazal, please see "WHAT IS A GHAZAL AND HOW TO WRITE IT?Open in new Window.

* The last couplet needs explanation for the uninitiated. It is a common style in Urdu poetry for the poet to refer to his own grave, imagining a scene where the beloved comes thither to shed tears, though she might have spurned him in life. The veil that is ubiquitous in muslim culture ensures that the lover is always pining to get a glimpse of the beloved's face!

DO LAFZ KAH KE WO HAMAARE DIL KO LE GAYE

Do lafz kah ke wo hamaare dil ko le gaye
saudaa ye be-hisaab kaisaa ham ko de gaye

aaye wo bazm mein aur ham na kah sake aadaab
nazarein tikiin thiin un pe ham zubaan se gaye

Un ka diyaa gam bhi hamein jii jaan se kabuul
Mere hasiin khwaab sab jitne bhi the gaye

Puuchhe koii nazarein milaa ke ham ko kyaa milaa
barbaad motii kitne merii aankh ke gaye

taa-zindgii ham wasl se jin ke rahe mahruum
be-pardaa ho ke wo Khalish kii kabr pe gaye.
