The adventures of my nine year old son Jonah, who has autism.

a trippy kid
Since I did my fair share of hallucinogenic drugs in my hey-day, I can't help but describe a lot of Jonah's behavior as, well, trippy.

Lately he has been holding his hands in front of his face while he looks up, almost as if shielding his eyes from some sun that only he can see....he will wave his hands around like a deadhead chick might dance during drums & space.

Also he has such an innocent wonder, an unabashedness that is sweet and kind of piercing....he is almost completely uninhibited about everything he does. Of course the flip side of that pretty coin is that he has no real empathy, either....no perspective from which to view others as human, feeling folk.

Jonah does, however, show lots of affection for the people he loves -- especially me, andy, and my parents. for us there are hugs and kisses aplenty.

....until we make him mad, and he hits or grabs our glasses, earning a time out.

sometimes it's hard to sort out which behaviors are autistic and which ones are just plain "toddler."
