We named him Jonah

for the whales we met on watches
off the shore of Provincetown
whose calls, majestic touches,
were like mysteries we'd found

and Russell for my grandpa
died the year we got engaged
who used to call me "meatball"
and whose love could not be gauged

now he's three, and we a family
and his silence is our song;
