Thursday, December 24, 2004 - 12:10 AM Whew, haven't written in here for a long time - school's been major hell these days. Everyone is running around trying to complete their college apps before the deadlines, trying to get their recommendations in, crying over their Early Decision results - yep, shows how lovely the college application process is, what with all the colleges timing their deadlines around the "Holiday Season". Depression does not make for good Christmas cheer. Anyways, for some reason, our senior class has been officially screwed over by the colleges. You see, our high school has always been one of the top public schools in the nation and last year's stats were pretty damn good for college entrance acceptances in the top Ivy Leagues. For example, Harvard accepted 16 people early decision from our school. This year, 60 applied and 4 got in. Everyone was befuddled because some of the most excellent, well-rounded applicants (no, not me I didn't apply, but my 97 average, club president, Intel researcher friend did and she got deferred. ) were deferred and everyone was floored by the drastic drop in the stats. Then Yale came in - only 4 again. Dartmouth - 4. Princeton fared relatively better - 10 or so. But this year was a killer. I, myself, didn't get into my school (Columbia University) early decision either, but fortunately, I've never really been particularly "passionate" about one school before so I wasn't as heartbroken as my other classmates were. Yup yup, the biggest grievance I had was that I would have to get my other applications rolling again. But oh wells, time to snap into shape and get my work done over the winter break! I will make through this alive! Oh and btw, my teacher showed us a part of this movie called The Gods Must Be Crazy today. Even though it's pretty old (I would say 70-80ish? Maybe?), it's hilarious - and provides brain food as well! Basically, it revolves around social anthropology - a sort of contrast between the tranquil, African Bushmen tribal natives and the so called "civilized" Western world. After a Coke bottle gets dropped out of an airplane near the Bushmen who've never encountered the Western culture and the people before (they believe the bottle was sent down from the sky by the Gods), the two different worlds clash in an absolutely chaotic, yet humorous way. It's so very well done with a lot of wacky, over the top, funny situations that has you rolling on the floor. ~ Maeven |
