She could text
Words: 234 // For "Daily Flash Fiction ChallengeOpen in new Window.

It had been one of those weeks. The washing machine had conked and the number she had for the repairman had gone invalid. She'd have to book the repairman online and she was too old for that, she didn't do these things online. In her mind's eye, she saw a pile of dirty laundry growing till it became a mountain ... this was silly. She needed to call someone and get some sense knocked into her head.

She could text, at least. One by one, she texted her friends - 'may I call?' One by one, they either human-replied or auto-replied 'sorry busy now' in some way. She had nobody!

Fiercely, she wiped the tears off. No self-pity, she admonished herself. You've chosen to live alone. She went to You Tube and clicked randomly on some instrumental music. She listened. It was their song, but he wasn't here anymore. Involuntarily, her feet began to dance. She danced till she was exhausted, and then sank on to the sofa.

She could text. She picked up the phone and texted.

Fifteen minutes later, the bell rang and she went to answer the door. "You ordered cake, Madam?"

She paid the cash and carried the cake carefully in. She put it on the table. She set two places - table-mat, plate, knife, fork.

"Happy Anniversary, darling, and please don't get any cake on your clothes, the washing machine isn't working."
