Serendipity

Serendipity: that subtle nudge of Fate's hand
When I'm stuck in the gas station checkout lane
Ten minutes past my deadline—
It's getting dark.
Then
At a busy intersection, there's a crash;
I realize if I'd arrived ten minutes sooner, I'd be in it.

In olden days, they called it Providence
Because the Deists distanced themselves from a personal God
Yet thought it wise to attribute things to an unseen hand.

Serendipity: I see it every day in my life,
Though it's hard to put into words
Because they're such trivial things.

Being in the right place at the right time
To hear a favorite song in public;
Finding a stuffed animal on my wishlist
At a thrift store far from home;
Spotting a pretty cardinal in front of me,
While listed in my phone's "nearby WiFi:"
Angels on Earth.

Even something as unsettling as
Watching a heart-wrenching music movie
About a man facing the electric chair
Then discovering a book
Debunking the death penalty.

Love and time intersect
Weaving webs of mystery.
This is serendipity.
