taxi Drivers Know

Back in the day during the fall of the Shah
The only person in the Embassy
Who knew what was going on
Was a Farsi-speaking ex-Peace Corps Volunteer.
The ambassador and higher-ups,
Dismissed his warnings saying.
“What does he know? He talks to taxi drivers”.
Taxi drivers always know the real deal.

True story. He was apparently about the only person in the Embassy who spoke Farsi, everyone dismissed his warnings as their contacts were telling them everything was under control, then the Shah was overthrown and the Embassy was occupied., shocking the entire world. I believe he was one of the hostages and played a reluctant role as a translator during the ordeal. He retired and wrote a memoir about his time.
