Separation Anxiety
I remember the day you first discovered me
you thought I was chasing you over the playground
you ran giggling and shrieking on those chubby, stumpy legs
until I disappeared under the shade of the old maple

I remember when we were both tall, cool and lanky
I walked before you into your future proud to be your image,
projecting confidence in our gait strong and steady,
but the earth spins and time turns us all around

Now as the sun sets on your life
and I am stretched out forever behind you
I lay helpless across the wall, my arms limp, hanging down
my head on the ceiling, my neck bent unnaturally.

The embers or your life go cold and I am not included in their resurrection.

You seem at peace in your bodily end,
I feel only terror at the encroaching void.
