Discontent
Winter wakes early these mornings, knocking on the electric baseboard, causing long-dormant coils to hum with the current coursing through them. The metal casing, stiff and cold complains loudly with every undetectable measure of expansion. The heat singes fluffs of dust and cobwebs built in more hospitable weather. They fill the cracks and threaten my nostrils with the faint fear of something burning without flames. The sun never rises before I do. The coffee pot gurgles in the dark kitchen. Where there was once a symphony of outrageous joy and a call to celebrate life, there is only a cacophony of mournful noise that resounds within sealed windows.

the birds have all gone
there are no more waking songs
the world wears a shroud

Prompt - Write a Haibun

Two competing forces of nature - tragic love story? I managed joy and mourning, I don't know of anything that compete more in nature than life and death, summer and winter.
