Master of Crows
Master of Crows
He appeared with a squall of rain that evening, opening the gate to the churchyard with a quick shove of his hand, apparently unheedful of the shriek of the rusted hinges. Above circled the crows. Their voices were harsh in the gathering gloom, as though summoning the dark shades of night to attend their leader far below.
So he came to the church with its gaping windows and crumbling stones. He paused before the door while the crows settled in strategic positions upon the roof.
When the silence from within became too oppressive, he moved forward and entered the church. Inside he picked his way through the drifts of windblown leaves and dust, noting the signs of long abandonment, until he reached the altar.
Then he fell on his face before the stone cross and called out, “Forgive me Lord for I have sinned.”
