Ten. Nine. Eight.

Roger held his breath.

The countdown seemed to grind out more slowly with each number announced. Launches were nerve wracking, but this time he couldn’t wait to leave Earth.

The mission to Mars was a chance to escape - two years of peace and solitude in silent space. He signed up eagerly.

Anything to escape the torment that his wife wreaked upon his life daily. If Roger had known she’d be such a haunt, he never would have killed her.

Three. Two. One.

“And just where do you think you’re taking me?” Sylvia demanded in a shrill voice.
