Night Visions
Roddy stumbled out of the pub and took a moment for his world to stop spinning. When his vision cleared.

What the hell was he going to tell Martha? He'd spent all the grocery money in the pub and now all he had to show for it was the ripe smell of liquor that he knew she'd smell a mile away.

He couldn't go home.

He glanced towards the edge of the village. The woods were already deep in shadow. An owl's hoot sent a shudder down his spine. He hated the idea, but he figured it was better to sleep rough in the bush than try to take his sorry ass home.

He took his first few steps toward the wood. A flash of something green caught his eye. Had that been a leprechaun?

He stared straight into the woods where he was sure he'd seen the thing go.

"Silly old bugger", he muttered to himself as he neared the forest edge. "No such thing as Leprechauns and shamrocks."

"Ya don't say, and here I was thinking me mam was telling me tales."

Roddy froze as his eyes roved over the tree line. He saw nothing. Laughter sent another shiver down his spine.

"I'd say you could catch me and make me tell you where me pot of gold was, but seeing as how ya don't believe - I'll be on me way."

"Wait," Roddy yelled just as his eyes spied a wee man in a green top hat and verdant tales.

The wee man tipped his hat and winked at him before vanishing into the forest mist.

Roddy stared at the spot the little man had been. Without another thought he rushed forward crashing into a tree stump and knocking himself out. There he stayed until morning.
