Heading Home
I step down onto the footpath,
immediately absorbed into
the stream of humanity
flowing
down
the
hill.
I eye the rush and chaos,
the lights and glamour,
and feel a part,
but apart of it all.
The woosh and growl of
passing traffic drives
right into my daydreams
and my thoughts drift
to dinner,
with a guilty glance
at the woman sitting kerbside
with a tattered paperback and
a smoking cigarette clutched
between gnarled fingers.
