Jesus told his followers not long before he ascended to the Father that when He left, He would send the Holy Spirit as a comforter to them. They would then receive power to be His witnesses to the whole earth.

Acts 1:8

but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
