ashes on the wind

I caught myself laughing, today--
it bubbled up like sunshine
bursting from the clouds,
like a rainbow arching across
the sky, like hope sneaking out of the box
and scattering like ash over the world,
and my laughter faded
and I remembered how empty I was
without you, and I was sorry.
