Below are the definitions out of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary: lucky adjective ˈlə-kē luckier; luckiest Synonyms of lucky 1 : having good luck 2 : happening by chance : FORTUITOUS 3 : producing or resulting in good by chance : FAVORABLE 4 : seeming to bring good luck a lucky rabbit's foot blessed adjective bless·ed ˈble-səd variants or less commonly blest ˈblest Synonyms of blessed 1 religion a : held in reverence : VENERATED the blessed saints b : honored in worship : HALLOWED the blessed Trinity c : BEATIFIC a blessed visitation 2 : of or enjoying happiness specifically, Christianity : enjoying the bliss of heaven —used as a title for a beatified person the blessed Virgin Mary 3 : bringing pleasure, contentment, or good fortune a blessed event 4 —used as an intensive never had one blessed minute of instruction —Charles Scribner Jr. At first, they seem the same; both are adjectives (or descriptives) whereas lucky doesn't have the "religious" connotation of blessed. Others might say that they are the same. It falls to perspective to define the term luck. A person can seem to have good luck, or bad luck depending on the circumstances around him/her. A person who is blessed, however, can be blessed regardless of the circumstances surrounding them. Matthew 5:3-12(NIV) gives us God's view of being blessed - Jesus' words from the Sermon on the Mount: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. So, I think, lucky is what the world terms fortunate - with or with out God. Blessed, however is from God. Just my thoughts on the matter. |
