Alice in Wonderland

My Missing Arm

My arm is aching. It keeps me awake all night. Come morning, I’ll call the clinic, have it checked out. That thought runs through my head off and on.

Finally the sun shines into my window. Time to call the doctor. Push back the covers.

“Aarghhh! Yikes!” I scream.

“What? What’s wrong?” John runs into the bedroom, rushes to me.

“My arm! My left arm! It’s gone….missing! Look for it, where is it? Did it fall off?” I’m patting the covers, looking in the sheets.

“Oh honey, settle down, of course it didn’t fall off.” Then he saw. I could tell from his face.

“It’s really gone, isn’t it! Arghhh!” I screamed again as I fell back into my pillow. “Is there blood? There must be blood. Lots of blood. I can’t look. Tell me.”

“No Marie, no blood. It’s just, just…like it was never there. Weird, but you just don’t have a scar or wound or anything. Just no left arm.” John got down to look closer, he poked where my left arm used to be.“Does this hurt?”

I felt a poking. It woke me.

“What’s going on? Why are you poking my arm?”

“You were talking in your sleep. You told me to.”

I jumped out of bed, grabbed both arms, shouted, “Hallelujah!” I then kissed my husband and jumped and shouted some more.

“So my arm isn’t missing?”

“No, honey. Your arm is just fine.”

“That was one weird dream.” I laid back on the bed. “Let me tell you about it…”
