Humour is Such a Subjective Thing

When I write (and also in my personal life), I try to do so with an element of humour, the object being to entertain. I'm a clown at heart, but what I have noticed is that my jokes, often secreted within the stories I write, are completely missed by many who read them.

This could be because these attempts at being funny, simply aren't. Or it might be a cultural thing where people from different parts of the world don't have the same sense of humour (or perhaps have none at all). Satire is subtle, and unless it is understood (and appreciated), it can and does fly over the heads of those unacquainted with its nuances compared to other, more in-your-face types of comedy.

With the problems facing the world right now, perhaps comedy is not at the forefront of people's minds. It certainly appears, particularly in the US (coming from my own perspective and I could be wrong about this), that there isn't a lot to laugh about. The pandemic, war in Europe and mass shootings are definitely a cause for concern, but I do wonder if these tragic events are reflected in the moods of the population at large.
