her haiku
A pony enrolled in my class
came early Monday morning
a red apple for the teacher
ribbons tied elaborately
in her mane
she wished to be unsaddled
of equine expectations
a poet in training
she was there to develop
her true horse voice
she sat on a special
chair I’d had made
at a stable desk
& cultivated silence
with high heeled
horseshoes
on her keyboard
she wrote notes
that she rewrote as poems
her rampant enjambment
had a unique edge
her similes brought disbelief
but what was least expected
was her haiku
I was grateful, glad to have
a pony in my class
poetic, quiet, beribboned
it made a subtle, welcome
change from humans
