Maelstrom

The spiral galaxy turning in the void,
like the eye in the hurricane,
the tidal whirlpool in the strait,
water hastening towards the drain,
slowly at first, unconvinced
of direction, but gaining speed,
the centre’s proximity persuading
to join the rush to oblivion.
